What is a Facelift?
A facelift, clinically known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that is designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and the other telltale signs of aging on the face. Due to exposure to the elements, stress, age, or heredity, the skin on our faces begins to become lax. This skin laxity can lead to wrinkles, deep set lines, and sagging skin which adds years to your appearance and cause certain features to look sunken or deflated.
Because the skin often sags at the jowls, chin, and neck, additional procedures may be necessary for comprehensive results. To perform this procedure, Dr. Eagan will lift and tighten the underlying facial muscles to create a more aesthetically pleasing contour and youthful facial structure. Stubborn fat deposits will be removed and the skin will be pulled tighter. The key to this portion of the procedure is to avoid pulling the skin too tight and not remove too much skin. This tends to leave the face looking unnatural. Dr. Eagan ensures her patients with very natural looking results through the various facelift techniques she has created and perfected throughout her years of experience.
What Does a Facelift Treat?
The areas treated during a facelift procedure depends on what technique you have chosen to address your particular concerns. In general, a facelift procedure is used to treat:
- Excess skin
- Wrinkles and folds
- Deep lines
- Lax facial muscles
- Facial fat deposits
Types of Facelifts
A facelift is a very broad term, encompassing different procedures that treat multiple regions on the face. These techniques can be used in combination with one another or as individual procedures depending on your concerns and aesthetic goals. Listed below are the different procedures that make up a facelift.
As stated in the name, a mid facelift addresses the middle portion of the face, only treating the area between the eyebrows and nose. This procedure will remove lax skin and wrinkles from around the eyes and cheeks. The incisions are made along the hairline, camouflaging scars.
This procedure targets the bottom third of the face, addressing the region from the nose to the jaw. This particular facelift technique treats the jowls, “smile lines” (otherwise known as nasolabial folds), sagging skin around the mouth, and definition of the jawline.
An eyebrow lift, or otherwise called a forehead lift, addresses the upper portion of the face, between the hairline and the eyes. Excess skin will be removed and the skin will be tightened to provide a taut but very natural looking appearance. This procedure will lift the eyebrows and minimize sagging eyelid skin, ultimately opening up and brightening the face.
A traditional facelift is the combination of a mid and lower facelift. This would be an ideal procedure for you if you have severe muscle and skin laxity, wrinkles, folds, and deep lines in multiple areas of the face and are looking for full facial rejuvenation.
Ideal candidates for a facelift procedure are men and women between the ages of 40-70.
However, there are some cases in which this age range does not apply; candidacy is determined on a case by case basis. You are a good candidate for this procedure if you have moderate to severe skin and muscle laxity throughout the face that has led to an aged appearance.
You should be a non-smoker, be in good health, and have realistic expectations. If you have any underlying health conditions or allergies that can lead to complications or a negative impact on the results, this procedure may not be ideal for you.
Dr. Eagan will properly evaluate your concerns and make recommendations based on your best options.
During the initial consultation with Dr. Eagan, she will ask you what your concerns are and what results you are looking to achieve. She will then review your medical history, routine medications, and current health conditions or allergies. To determine candidacy, she will perform a thorough physical examination of the facial structure. Through this, you and the doctor will build a treatment plan based on your individualized needs. If Dr. Eagan feels that you may require additional or alternative treatments to achieve the desired results, she will make these recommendations at this time. At the consultation, you will be given a personalized quote for your procedure.
After you schedule your procedure date, Dr. Eagan will provide you with certain instructions that you are asked to follow to prepare you for surgery. If you smoke, she will ask you to quit approximately three weeks prior to the procedure date. It is also recommended that you avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before the facelift.
You will be advised to arrange a ride home the day of your procedure. Additional custom instructions may be provided. If you have any further questions during this time, we ask you to contact our office and speak with one of our knowledgeable and helpful staff members.
Facelift Surgery Process
Dr. Eagan will make the necessary markings on the face to help ensure accuracy throughout the procedure. The facelift will be performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure itself takes about 2-5 hours, although this may vary depending on the extent of treatment you are receiving. Dr. Eagan also uses the “No-Drain” facelift for improved scarring and comfort. Once the procedure has been completed, you will be taken to the recovery area for a couple hours before being released home.
Once Dr. Eagan has completed your facelift procedure, you will be monitored in our recovery area for a short time; after which you are free to return home or to a nearby hotel. Before leaving the office, you will be given a list of recovery instructions that you are recommended to follow to aid in the healing process.
You will be advise to walk a minimal amount the night after your surgery to help improve circulation throughout the body and reduce the risk of blood clots from forming. You will be given a prescription for pain medication to help with any discomfort you may experience during this time.
Your face will be placed in a compression garment that must remain on throughout the recovery stage to help reduce swelling and possible bruising that may occur. It is recommended that you avoid daily activity for up to one week after the procedure and should avoid more strenuous activities for two weeks to ensure the proper healing. Until the incisions are healed, it is best to avoid pools, hot tubs, and saunas to help prevent possible infections.
Final results can be seen after swelling has fully subsided, which will be about four to six weeks. You will notice that your skin is considerably firmer and the underlying muscles now create a youthful contour and defined facial structure. The results, although very long-lasting, do not prevent future natural signs of aging from arising. To maintain these results, recurrent non-invasive treatments may be used.
As part of facial rejuvenation, reducing the loose skin and fat around the neck can greatly improve a patient’s appearance, sometimes taking years off. Dr. Eagan has several methods she uses, including the “I ♥ My Face” movement that she has created, to improve your facial appearance These methods include THERMItight’s scarless face and neck lift, Kybella’s chemical double chin reduction and neck lift, as well as neck muscle and skin tightening through a surgical facelift.
THERMItight is a minimally invasive treatment that addresses wrinkles and sagging skin throughout the jawline and neck. This treatment utilizes radiofrequency energy to target and heat tissue. The heating is emitted through a probe just under the skin. During treatment, Dr. Eagan will monitor the temperature of the tissue to ensure no damage to any surround tissues. The warm temperatures will contract the tissue and tighten the skin. Results will continue to improve, seeing the final outcome after six to 12 months.
Kybella is an injectable fat reducing treatment that targets fat under the chin, known as a “double chin”. Through a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart from each other, you can diminish the problematic fat that resides in this area without the need for surgery. Because the fat cells themselves are destroyed, the results are permanent.
If you struggle with excess skin throughout the neck, you may find great benefit in a neck lift. During this procedure, the neck muscles will be tightened and excess lax skin will then be removed. The remaining skin will be joined together for a more youthful, firm appearance. Adding a neck lift to a facelift will provide comprehensive results.
The cost of your facelift will vary depending on the technique chosen and if any additional procedures will be necessary to obtain your desired results. During your consultation with Dr. Eagan, she will be able to provide you with a personalized facelift quote based on your exact needs.
